9th-12th Grade Enrichment through the IMIN Program
San Diego Unified School District
21st Century Community Learning Centers, After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs)
IMIN Program - Expanded Learning Before and After School
The San Diego Unified School District's IMIN Program for high school students is funded by the 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) and After School Safety and Enrichment for Teens (ASSETs) grant through the California Department of Education’s Expanded Learning Division. The program is designed as an integral part of young people’s education, engaging them in year-round learning opportunities that prepare them for college, career and life. What does “IMIN” mean? The name of the program was developed in conjunction with high school students. Students, when asked what they do after school, often answered, "I'm in dance" or I'm in robotics." They identify with the activity and simply express their association by saying they are part of the activity. The association was transformed into the program name of IMIN, in which a variety of exciting learning, health, social services, and cultural programs are provided before school and after school in the following:
-
Safe and supportive environment
-
Academic support
-
College and career preparation and readiness
-
Learning enrichment activities
-
Work based learning experiences include career awareness, career exploration, and career training.
-
Physical fitness activities
-
Youth leadership opportunities
-
Life skills
-
Social-Emotional skill building
Academic support is provided including tutoring, credit recovery classes, study skills development, homework assistance, and English as a Second Language (ESL). A variety of college awareness and preparation activities are offered including college tours, mentoring from college mentors, information on financial aid and Pell grants, including Cal Grant, and academic and college advising.
Career awareness activities are provided such as employer guest speakers, workplace tours, and job shadows. While enrolled in the program, students complete a portfolio with a resume, sample job applications, and cover letters. Students practice interviewing skills, learn how to dress for success and learn about workplace expectations.
Students receive leadership training and are given opportunities to develop leadership skills by participating in community service activities, project-based learning, and solving real world problems. They also learn life skills with instruction in financial planning and management, banking and budgeting.
Physical fitness activities are provided for students to participate in intramural sports such as basketball, volleyball, running club, yoga, soccer, dance and weight training. Additional clubs are formed based on students’ interests and needs.
The program also provides support to families by sharing community resources, as needed, offering workshops for families to learn the a-g high school graduation requirements, and referrals are provided to community-based organizations for additional services.
